Patterns are pleasing to the eye in photographs. Rules, when followed, produce exceptional images. But what takes a photograph from good to great is the photographer’s ability to break the mold. To ignore the rules to tell a story that is much more powerful than any other. The story of an individual.
That’s what Mauro Martins does in his photo series titled Counterflow. Mauro captures incredible, unscripted moments in which an individual decided that the mentality of the crowd was not the mentality that they wanted to share.
Mauro said he made the series “to remind us that even if your own path feels against the flow sometimes, you should keep going if you want to. You don’t have to change your course just because everybody else is doing something usual and you’re not.”
